Six basic questions about the Metaverse

In the technology universe, and even outside of it, the metaverse is the word of the moment. This new technology era will undoubtedly transform the lives of all of us. However, there are still many doubts about what this new reality will look like.

What is this  online universe that we will be part of?

Where did it come from?

Coined by American science fiction writer Neal Stephenson, the term metaverse first appeared in the 1992 book Snow Crash. Released in Brazil with the original name and with the title translated as Nevasca, the novel tells the story of Hiro, a pizza delivery man who, in his spare time, is a hacker samurai in a virtual world.

The book’s original title, Snow Crash, is an expression that was used when a Macintosh computer crashed and the CPU started drawing random dots on the screen, which resembled a snowstorm.

Stephenson’s science fiction novel was the starting point for the creation of some of the most popular games, such as Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft.

What is it?

The metaverse can be defined as a parallel universe in which we can have avatars to interact with others to do business and have fun in fully digital environments. It is a network with different 3D environments, rendered in real-time.

It is the next stage of the Internet. The first was internet access by fixed connection and the second was the mobile connection. Even though much of the data sent to mobile devices is managed and relies on a fixed structure, mobility has caused a disruption, exponentially enhancing interactivity. The metaverse will take us into the internet, in a virtual 3D environment.

What does it take to make it come true?

A convergence of various technologies such as virtual and augmented reality is essential to make the metaverse a reality, even if virtual. The various available platforms will have to be connected and compatible to move from one to the other.

For more people to enter this universe, the necessary equipment must become not only more accessible but also evolve, incorporating more functionality.

How to Access

Although it is possible to access these environments with a PC, to have a better experience it is necessary to use equipment such as augmented reality glasses, gauntlets, and other accessories. The metaverse is accessed through augmented virtual reality and expanded reality platforms. Some of the most popular currently available are Axie Infinity, Fortnite, Decentraland, Horizon, Sandbox, and Roblox.

What will we be able to do?

The simplest examples are technology solutions such as 3D simulators.

According to experts, the health area is one of the most promising, with remote surgeries, learning without the need for real bodies, and monitoring of body conditions. In addition to business meetings, shopping, games, and other day-to-day activities.

How many people are already in the metaverse?

According to a survey by Kantar Ibope,  6% of Brazilians already access some of the platforms of the metaverse, that is, almost 5 million people. Gartner predicts that by 2026, 2 billion people will be in the metaverse.
